My observations are that babies can indeed swallow a lot of air, particularly with a mom with an active MER, and since peristalsis is initiated with breastfeeding, some of the early injested air has already passed into the intestines by the end of the feeding. Gulping is often a positionally caused problem, and the baby has difficulty controlling the breast. With fixing the position, control resumes, air swallowing stops, and colicy gassy symptoms subside.
