My observations are that babies can indeed swallow a lot of air, particularly
with a mom with an active MER, and since peristalsis is initiated with
breastfeeding, some of the early injested air has already passed into the
intestines by the end of the feeding. Gulping is often a positionally caused
problem, and the baby has difficulty controlling the breast. With fixing the
position, control resumes, air swallowing stops, and colicy gassy symptoms
subside. Everyone relaxes.
