Dear Dr. Jack or other Lactnet friends, I've been working with a mom with a sever case of colitis. A few weeks ago her GP precribed Flagyl (10-14 days) as treatment and to discontinue breastfeeding her 6 month old while on it. Baby was off breast for three days, refusing bottles and taking only a few sips of water from cup, refusing formula from cup. After receiving info from Dr. Hale and mother improving, GP cut dose in half and said mom could resume bf. Baby refused breast and was in hospital by day five, dehydrated. Mom was trying all my suggestions to break nursing strick, on day seven baby resumed bf. (This is mom's fifth baby, all have been breastfed and self weaned.) Mom's diarrhea is back after finishing Flagyl and GP has sent her to GI specialist. He is running test and wants to prescribe Asacol 400mg oral dose 3xd. Mom will not begin med until I get back to her with info as to safety. From Hale's book, I understand it to say it's poorly absorbed by GI tract and infant would receive about 1% of maternal dose. Does not mention if this is ever used in pediatric care. I need more info to share with this mother. She doesn't want to wean this baby again, but she does need relief from her problem.TIA Warmly, Pat Lindsey, IBCLC
