All our local WIC staff underwent an intensive 3 day BF training a few
years back. One of the most important changes that came out of the
training was that program staff (e.g., clerical) began to feel that they
had a role in BF promotion. They changed the way they asked certain
questions. (e.g., "How are you feeding your baby?" rather than "Bottle or
breast.") They changed the posters around their stations. They make sure
the Anita Baker video is showing in the waiting room when new pregnant
clients are in.

I've even overheard a certain amount of subversive waiting room engineering
going on--seating the new pregnant clients right next to the nursing moms,
etc.

The program staff is the front line, the first & last contact, at the WIC
office. They can be powerful breastfeeding promoters!!
