Hi Pearl, This baby you're talking about seems to be gaining fine to me. 6lbs2oz to 8lbs is a gain of 30 oz in the 42 days of her six week age that equals .7143 ounces per day of gain. Which, if you're following the recommended guideline (I'll cite the Breastfeeding Answer Book, LLLI, pgs 118-119) of 4-8 ounces per week, she is right there at 5oz. per week!! I don't have a chart in front of me, is 8lbs below the 30th percentile for a six week old? Even if it is, if she's continuing to gain at a this steady rate and all her other markers are on target..ie, she's making appropriate numbers of wet and soiled diapers, the bowel movements are nice breastmilk mustard (as opposed to greenish and stringy which might suggest hindmilk/foremilk imbalance), she's alert and happy, skin tone is elastic, fontanel is not sunken, mucous membranes moist, length and head circumference continuing to grow... If all appear fine what exactly is the MD so uptight about? There is a growth chart for breastfed babies -- I've hunted and can't find the citation in my disaster, but it's by Dewey and was published in '95. I"m sure someone has it handy. This baby is sounding like a typical slow but sure gainer... she's not failure to thrive, just putting along. Sudden drop off in her gain, mother reporting "less milk" or more problems with feeds would be red flags... but otherwise... I made a chart on this for our local peds... i'll try to dig it up and post it.. it's a good reference tool and quick check for regaining guidelines. anne Anne E. Robb
