>>Who has used that Dimple Ring thing? Is it for these kinds of cracks/nipples? I do think that a lot of maintaining bf with this kind of crack depends on the mom--and some good TLC from family and support people. But what do YOU all do as a way to handle this kind of nipple wound?<< I have a dimple ring on hand, and I've used one once before. They are meant to help keep a dimple open long enough to dry--- dimples being similar to an inversion of the tip of the nipple only upon itself. A dimple ring might hold the nipple out--- is keeping the nipple out long enough to dry a problem here? This is a tough case to sleuth without seeing. If moisture can be ruled out, I would wonder if there is an infection of yeast or bacteria preventing healing. If so, a topical antifungal or antibacterial ointment applied after drying might help the process along. I am assuming that this type of trauma did not occur with babies #1 and #2, and so I am reluctant to blame the inversion itself, and lean towards secondary issues. Looking forward to hearing more on this case! -Lisa Marasco, BA, LLLL, IBCLC
