Dear Lactnetters: This is incredibly exciting for me to have access to such a resource. Anyway, I have been approached by a friend of mine who is employed as a nurse practioner concerning a question concerning Vitamin supplementation while breastfeeding. Please allow me to explain: She works at an inner city clinic here in Michigan which services mainly a Hispanic population and people of color. They have a very low breastfeeding initiation rate, so when a mom does bf, my friend does everything she can to encourage them. Well, apparently this clinic has had a couple of reported cases of rickets in the babies being breastfed. As you may be aware, here in Michigan we see very direct sunlight due to lake effect from Lake Michigan. The physicians and nurse clinicians want to get more information on this. What is the current recommendation on supplementing bf infants with Vitamin D as well as when to initiation fluoride drops? I have re-read these topics in Lawrence and Auerbach, but wondered if there's anything else. I'd appreciate seeing any responses you might have. Thanks so much! Mary Ann
