If I may serve as a case study of 1------- in 1984, after the birth of my
second born, I developed what was eventually diagnosed as esophagitis.
Carafate was painful to take and in fact would initiate my symptoms as it
scraped down my esophagus. After much discussion with my reluctant GI doctor,
I was put on zantac (I don't remember how old my son was--- 8 or 9 mos by
then, and didn't start on solids until 8 mos). We watched him for any
changes, which never occurred. In my case, it appeared to be okay. My
symptoms again resurfaced after the birth of my third child, and when I
wanted to go on zantac again when she was 3-4 mos of age, the doctor did not
want to approve this and made me wait longer. At any rate, we never had any
discernible problems with my babies.
