Nancy, I would certainly pursue the thyroid angle. I had a mom who "did everything right." Home birth, excellent diet, focused mothering, etc. But she had a VERY low milk output, necessitating abm supplemet. She tried to get her doc to take the thyroid issue seriously and he wouldn't. After several months she put $300 out of her pocket to get a good thyroid screening and there was a problem--not great enough to show up on the usual tests. She began supplements and her supply increased, and since the baby was beginning solids she was able to eliminate the abm. She just had a second baby and all is fine--milk flowing all over the place and she is one happy woman! I believe that when this happens to a later baby after making enough milk with earlier ones, the thyroid problem has developed at this time. I am not knowledgeable on these things, but perhaps this problem can come at any time in ones life. BTW, I do a lot of wondering...Has anyone asked the moms who can produce only a little bit of milk what they were fed as infants? With the concerns about soy-based abm and the phyto-estrogens and testosterone levels in boys, what about a possible long-term effect on girls? Actually there are so many things that bombard us throughout our lives that could impact on our ability to feed our young.
