I have a question for Dr. Tom Hale - if this has already come up, a
thousand pardons. There was an article on heroin-addicted mothers in
Israel which began "When Sima's baby was born, he cried for days. She
couldn't nurse him. Her milk contained heroin." I remembered something
that Mary Broadfoot from Scotland posted a long time ago about
morphine/heroin, but couldn't remember just what it was about, so went to
Dr. Tom's Red Book "Medications and Mother's Milk", looked up both heroin
and morphine and promptly got confused. Is there a discrepancy here or am
I not reading it right? Heroin, when injected, rapidly metabolizes to
morphine. Heroin is AAP contraindicated in breastfeeding mothers, but
morphine is AAP compatible with breastfeeding. Do I need an eye exam? Not
that anyone will ever ask me about it, but I am curious....Thank you, Dr.
Hale! P.S. I talked my FP, who is my only support, into ordering your
book for our local medical library! Put Beer Sheva on your map!
