Herpes does not "turn into" another form of herpes. However, lesions can be transmitted to other areas of the body through direct contact. If she touches a lesion on her breast or in the baby's mouth, then goes to the bathroom, it is possible to spread what would then be Herpes Simplex I to the genital area. Weaning would not prevent such an occurance, though care and good hygiene would. What would the nurse be trying to prevent with weaning? Mom & baby are already sharing it. I've worked with these and the biggest issue after they share it is pain management. Nancy
