I read with interest the post about the baby refusing breast that had been
vacuum delivery. I have noticed in my practice that these babies often have
difficulty feeding in the hospital and for even a few weeks after. I have
wondered if there is some swelling around the sixth cranial nerve that
interferes with the suck or if it is the trauma of the delivery. These
babies often have much difficulty in organization and tend to be the babies
that have difficulty maintaining a nutritive sucking pattern. Of course, then
mom's milk supply either is not well established or decreases which adds to
the decreased sucking incentives. I would like to know if anyone else has
noted this problem around vacuum extractions and if there has ever been any
research done.
I also would like to know any information on Maple Syrup Urine disease. I
don't seem to find much in my books and I know it is rare. Can they be even
partially breastfed? TIA Denise Stuart
