Had a call from a mom this afternoon.Baby is 3 1/2 months old,has been
gaining very well, content, fully breastfeeding until 1 month ago. Mom is
calling today because of constipation in the baby and the baby's obvious
discomfort. The constipation is not new---has had 1BM every 7-10 days
(approx."golfball"size amounts) for the past 2+months. Baby takes approx.
8oz ABM in 24 hrs. Mom has spoken to the MD several times. At his
recommendation, she gives Karo syrup in water twice daily and uses glycerin
suppositories every 3-4 days. The baby has been very content since birth
but is quite fussy the past week. Mom hasn't changed her diet etc. They
are leaving on vacation 5/24 and is worried. I suggested some comfort
measures and encouraged mom to build up breast milk supply by nursing often
and then supplementing only if necessary, pumping between feedings. This
mom wants to continue nursing through the summer, but admits to never
feeling full. I also suggested switching brands of ABM if she fells
supplementing is necessary, to see if a change might make a difference.

I would appreciate any additional suggestions/advice to give to this mom.
Please email me privately.
TIA!
