Help! Had a new mother call late last night. Her baby was 8 days old and she needed help trying to get the baby to RELACTATE. 20-yr-old mother, 1st baby, full-term, mom never planned to do anything BUT breastfeed. Labor went really fast - they introduced pitocin and within 90 minutes the baby was born. She had no pain medications, no epidural, etc. Only the pit. Baby nursed like a pro FIVE times her first day of life, then began having what the mother described as tremors. Mother was told to immediately suspend breastfeeding and give the baby formula for one week. They in told the mother the baby was having tremors because the mother had had too much caffeine before delivery. Has anyone out there ever heard of this happening? She said she is on no medication whatsoever. Bottom line with this mom (who had her own mother call me back tonight) is that baby is so nipple confused that even though milk is in and supply abundant, she can't stand to have the baby crying every time she tries to nurse and has given up. It makes me heartsick to see another breastfeeding relationship thrown to the wolves. My gut is that breastmilk (or truly at that point colostrum) was seen as the villian for tremors. Is this really possible?? If it is, its a new one on me. And to be told to totally suspend bfdg for an entire week to work the caffiene out of her system?? Was that necessary? Information, please - this is making me crazy!! Thanks, LactNetters!
