I am hoping ILCA will video my presentation at the Conference. One of my goals is to present my material in simple basic terms so that LCs, physicians, soon to be mothers can all look at the video and see the importance of breastfeeding. Most of my presentation will address the damaging side effects of bottle feeding and pacifier use. Most of the issues have been discussed in the literature in the past but for some reason keep getting swept under the carpet. I hope to present the information in a different way that will hopefully motivate the physician to listen. I discussed my presentation with a nationally known sleep researcher last week and he was very interested and open to the ideas. Personally I feel that physicians and other health care providers who recommend to mother who can - and are willing to breastfeed - that they should go ahead and bottle feed because there is no difference - are bordering on the edge of recommending child abuse. On the other hand, there are mothers because of reasons beyond their control, have to bottle feed or use other forms of supplementation, and who should not be made to feel guilty or feel bad if they cannot breastfeed. Hopefully by giving a physician and other health care providers a video of my presentation, a concise small booklet on the proven benefits of breast milk, and a video on frenotomies, they can be educated to the importance of breastfeeding. A major challenge is the fact that the benefits of breastfeeding are not taught in the medical or dental schools at this time. That may also be an area that needs to be addressed! At the Conference I will be asking for your help. I need articles on the topics that I will be covering in my presentation. With those articles I will amass a bibliography at the end of my article I hope to present to the JHL for possible publication - so that nobody can say there is nothing written on the topic. I know the articles are out there. I have recently bought the Macintosh program called EndNote 2 Plus for formatting bibliographies. Does anyone else use this program. Would like to hear from you. Looking forward to meeting you in beautiful Kansas City in July! Brian Palmer D.D.S. 4400 Broadway, Ste. 514 Kansas City, MO 64111 eMail - [log in to unmask]
