I would appreciate any information or suggestions on where to find more info on this topic: I have a client who first called when her baby was a couple months old and breastfeeding was well established. She was back at work and using a MiniEl reasonably successfully. She called because she had had a sudden onset of severe engorgement on the left breast. (This was April 13) Baby couldn't nurse, she couldn't get any milk with the MiniEl. By some fluke, I happened to ask about recent exercise and she has spent that morning raking the lawn and was aware of sore muscles from this activity. I got her to relax in a tub and continue with nursing and pumping and hand expression. It took about 18 hours before she was better. She decided to rent a double Lactina and is very pleased with the improvement. She called again yesterday. She had had a softball practice the previous evening and now is experiencing the same thing on the Right breast! Only the top half of the breast is painfully swollen. She is dealing with the problem ok but is wondering what she should do in the future. She she avoid playing softball this season? Is there any way to decrease the effect of exercise? I suggested that she stretch, warm up, etc. (she works at a sports clinic and must know all this stuff) and see if this makes a difference. I knew about this connection but never before dealt with someone who experienced this problem. She seems to be incredibly sensative. How often does this problem happen. Will it continue through out her lactation? Will she experience it with a subsequent child? Are there any published accounts? What would you suggest that she do? Thanks Ruth of Verona WI (yes, I know that I have been scarce on Lactnet, the arthritis in my neck is requiring some life style changes.)
