Somebody on the list recently recommended a book, Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities. I ordered it, picked it up at the bookstore yesterday, and have hardly put it down since. It's a thorough examintion of medical research, published in respected medical journals, which clearly contradicts much of routine medical practice, including the routine use of epidurals. It's frightening to realize that practice doesn't change in response to research findings. ( I suppose if it did, the entire medical obstetric economic system would collapse in ruins.) In any event, although it doesn't address breastfeeding, the book is a treasure trove of research articles relevant to the medical model of childbirth. Judy Dunlap, RNC, IBCLC
