Recently, I've had a lot of moms asking about pain meds during childbirth. I commonly refer them to their physicians because I am not allowed to give medical advice not specifically related to BF. (I am a peer BF counselor for the WIC program). Coincidently, however, there has been a rash of epidural discussion on LACTNET recently. I feel like I need to get my 2 cents in. What is the difference between an epidural and an interthecal? My impression is that an epidural numbs from the waist down and that an interthecal affects waist-thighs. Is this correct info? Is the medication the same injected in a different place? Are the dosages the same? What are the possible effects on BF? My moms are being told that these interthecals will not enter the baby's blood stream, will not give them headaches, will not affect the ability to move their legs, and that they are safe and effective. I am suspicious. Anyone??? Brenda
