I feel well-qualified to answer Jay's question about pregnancy and BF (at least from my own personal experience). I was blissfully unaware of my second pregnancy until the end of the first trimester because I felt fine and was still having light spotting when my menstrual periods were due. My first clue that I was pregnant came when my son (just turned 3)began having noticable changes in his nursing behavior. He fussed and fretted at the breast; did not seem satisfied and I could no longer hear him swallowing. A few days later I finally missed a period, took a test and realized I was a mom to be again. By the time I had an ultrasound to date my pregnancy (10 1/2 weeks along), I was sure Morgan was no longer receiving any milk even though he was still nursing. I tried to express (which had never been a problem for me) and got not one drop. I am now in the final trimester, wishing Morgan would wean on his own but it just doesn't seem to be in the cards. From what I have learned through LLL what is often the case is the flavor of the milk changes due to hormones in the first trimester, the milk often "dries up" in the second trimester, and in the final trimester the nursling receives colustrom. As for the dairy question, Morgan does have a dairy allergy and I have avoided dairy as a result of our nursing. When my milk first "dried up" I was excited by the thought of being able to consume dairy products as I wished. However my joy was shortlived. I was advised to limit my dairy intake because their is an increased risk of the unborn baby becoming sensitized to it. I tend to agree with this because I consumed large amounts of dairy when I was pregnant with Morgan. I was also advised to eat as wide a variety of foods as possible, and not too much of any one food. A baby in utero can be sensitized to anything the mom eats in large quantity, or so I'm told. Hope this was helpful. Jamie Gilcrest; Morgan's Mom; LLLL [log in to unmask]
