Mom at issue with employer and peers. Asks me if there is legal president for suit if prevented from pumping at work. 39 yr old who never wanted to have a baby but now never wants to stop nursing and wants tons more kids. Came to see me 2 wks ago in my "lactation consultant student drop-in clinic" with questions regarding return to work and pumping. -- Gave instructions for pumping with DBl kit, etc. Also go to work before return and talk to those involved with her intention/desire and make some kind of game plan. She called me yesterday in tears. She's getting nothing but flack from peers. They can't understand why she wants to do this and are adamant about it taking up too much time. 2-3 other women in same situation gave up pumping/brstfdg cuz of the pressure. Here's the really pathetic part. She is in 2nd year residency at Highland Hospital in Oakland CA. Her peers are physicians; the main protaganist is the chief resident. She has 4 mos to go and then on to fellowship/nephrology somewhere else. (It has been intimated that there could be "problems" with getting the desired fellowship!!) This is her second residency - already board certified in internal medicine - so she is well aware of the system, time, responsiblily, etc. Am sending her articles on Immune. properties in BM, article from SA Dec '95., reference to Brstfdg, Biocultural Perspective. Told her to write a letter of her perspective of her situation, what she wants, and her willingness to be flexible so everyone wins primarily her baby. What else?? No LC there. Told her the other moms in the employee pump room will be her succor. Any other ideas? Has anyone ever sued???? She returns to work end of FEB.
