I tried to send this before, but apparently no luck. Someone had asked about Wyeth pulling out ABM here in the states. For those of you interested, here's the release I received. PHILADELPHIA, January 8, 1996 -- Wyeth-Ayerst (W-A)Laboratories, a division of American Home Products Corporation (NYSE:AHP), announced today that it will phase out its US infant nutritional products. This decision is limited to the infant formula product line in the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. W-A will continue to market infant formula outside the US. The company's decision comes after an assessment of its strategic strengths in light of American Home Products Corporation's acquisition of American Cyanamid last year. Although W-A has supplied infant formula in the US for many years, in recent years there have been a number of fundamental changes in the dynamics of the US marketplace. These changes have included the increasing costs of competing in the overall infant nutritional market and the spiraling growth of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Food Program, which now accounts for more than half of all formula consumed in the US. As a result of these changes and the company's limited presence in the US infant nutritionals market, the domestic infant nutritional product line is not longer viable. Production of SMA, Nursoy, Bonamil and other specialized infant formulas for the US market will be phased out during 1996. The company's Mason, Michigan plant will be closed. However, the Georgia, Vermont plant will continue to produce infant nutritionals for the international market. Approximately 550 positions associated with the infant nutritional product line in the US will be eliminated. Non-union employees whose jobs are eliminated will be offered comprehensive separation.....(the rest of the paragraph states what the employees will receive.) Parents should be assured that SMA, Nursoy, and Bonamil infant formulas continue to be of the highest quality and will be available in retail stores for several more months. If parents, health care professionals or retailers have any additional questions, they may call W-A at 1-800-999-9384. W-A remains committed to the health care of all children and will continue to offer a wide array of pediatric health care products, including vaccines, anti-infectives and pediatric pharmaceuticals, through its Wyeth-Lederle Vaccines and Pediatrics unit, which was established after the acquisition of Amer. Cyanamid. The phase out only affects US infant nutritional products. Internationally, W-A has a strong presence in the infant formula market and is committed to supporting infant nutritionals abroad. (The last paragraph discusses that W-A is research-oriented and discusses what areas of health care it provides products .)
