Debbie Codding posted a question re: milk production occuring after early preg. losses. She wanted to know what was the earliest this could occur so she can counsel mothers experiencing this. I don't have a general reference for this, but can share that I had a phone call sev. yrs ago from an anonymous woman who had obtained a first trimester abortion and was shocked and terribly distressed to experience engorgement and subsequent leaking, etc. Her response to this unexpected event was to purchase a breast pump and express. She had a refrig. full of milk when she called me to ask if she could donate it.It was clear she was struggling with so many painful issues. We spoke for a while and then again on two other occasions as she weaned from the pump. This is probably not the typical course of events after miscarriage (I doubt most women stimulate the milk supply at this point -- though who knows? Perhaps the milk flow maintains some tenuous connection to the baby, and perhaps its not so strange to want to hold onto that.) What the story illustrates to me is that even with 1st trimester preg. loss, lactogenesis can occur. With stimulation, supply was, in this case, maintained at some level for several weeks.
