I can't speak to the 5% figure, but in _The Five Standards for Safe
Childbearing_ by David Stewart of NAPSAC, midwife Ina May Gaskin reports
birth and breastfeeding statistics from The Farm for 1970-1980.  In the
course of this period, 1,200 babies were born and *99.1%* were
breastfed.  In the text of her article, she states that most who were not
breastfed were not because they ended up being adopted by non-lactating
women.
