Title this: *It's the Insurance Company, Stupid.*(note to non-US readers, this is my attempt at political humor) With regards to output and discharge concerns: IF...the insurance company will only pay for a too short stay, and IF:, because of the too short stay the baby is discharged before feeding is established, causing FEAR to guide all protocols, and IF, no one wants to pay for follow up LC services- not the insurance companies, not the hospitals, and not the parents, THEN, the baby gets inferior formula in lieu of appropriate medical care, and goes on to have increased health problems for a lifetime. Seems to me it's the insurance companies hiding out somewhere running this show who need to answer to all of us- parents, LCs, doctors, nurses, hospitals, and most of all, the babies! ! ! Instead of trying to get the doctors to go along with what THEY perceive as a potentially threatening liability situation, how can we start a campaign aimed at *the ones who are really calling the shots?* If insurance paid for adequate prenatal education, adequate hospital stays, and adequate follow-up- the whole thing would be pretty much taken care of- or am I missing something? Maybe the time is ripe- with the recent negative press given to short stays. If it's proof of cost savings they need, we KNOW the numbers are in our favor. How come the insurance companies aren't doing their homework? Humph. Sue Jacoby, IBCLC & LLLL going out to get some fresh air and calm down.
