There was some research data a LONG time ago that disproved the old practice of
having new mothers push fluids, the current recommendation is to drink to
thirst.  Push fluids is a good idea when dealing with mastitis.

I have heard it surmised that the mechanism could be that prolactin is diluted.
But I think it is another of those things that we don't know why.

Hopefully, one of the members who keeps track of published stuff will fill in
the details, but since I made the comment against encouraging extra fluid, I thought
I better answer.
