Thanks to all of you who shared your thoughts about alternative feeding methods. I appreciate your perspectives. Finger feeding and bottle feeding are the alternative methods I use; the use of a cup is new to me. I know babies go from finger to breast, and from bottle to breast (some with much more difficulty than others). Is your experience in transitioning from cup to breast about the same or is there likely to be a need for the baby to suck (on finger for example) to go to the breast more easily? Would avoiding feedings from a firm object be more likely to support a disorganized baby to breastfeed when the disorganization is a result from birth trauma (forceps or vacuum)? Are there any studies that discuss this? I did a presentation to our state LC association sharing info from the ILCA conference by Sandra Lang and realized that I am lacking info about this. In rereading my original post I did not ask for this info from you in the best way. The beauty of Lactnet is I can ask you for your experiences and I am better equipped to approach my colleagues as I introduce ideas that are new. We went through the same thing when introducing finger feeding many years back but didn't have the benefits of this great service!
