However, they are not revered in quite the lofty way in current thought as in the past. A lesser known, fascinating developmentalist was Margaret Mahler (circa 50s) who actually observed the day-to-day behavior of nursing toddlers! (I can't imagine where she would have found them :>( ) Her writings are ahead of her time. When we studied her, my fellow students (who didn't own their own kids) thought she was really "out there" in suggesting that a toddler would need to "check in" so frequently with mom and...GASP!....BREASTFEED!
