I have apprentice LC's at my clinic frequently. I encourage students to
apprentice with as many LC's as possible. It gives them a taste of different
styles. Also as a clinical supervisor-- all of my students must apprentice
with me at least once. Our clinic is busy enough that in a typical day they
may observe or assist with 8 or more consults. Those that are in private
practice are harder to apprentice with because their business has peaks and
valleys, they can go days without a consult. Apprenticeships with lots of
babies may be more feasible in a lactation clinic, however I do think that it
is important for students to be exposed to private practice. In our area, a
few private practice LC won't accept students-- they don't want to share
information, zealousy guard chart forms etc.. because that person may become
competition soon.
