Pat.

I have had two clients who have had Depo Provera while breastfeeding. I
realize that this does not constitute any study or anything like that..but
this is my experience.

One mother was very young. Had Depo right after birth. Experienced a
dramatic drop in supply following the injection. Mother was 13, and it was
unclear if bf would have gone well due to family pressures.

Second mother took the shot when baby was about 3 mo old. Had been bf well,
pumping well at work, ....baby was thriving on human milk. After the shot,
the mother could pump only half of what she had previously been able to
obtain. Same pump. Same frequency. Nothing else that I could see that would
contribute to a supply drop. Mother was extremely frustrated...and upset
that her supply dropped. Mother took Reglan to increase supply, and supply
did increase by 100% with Reglan use.

Just my experience. I realize that this is not proof positive. However, it
is what I have seen in my private practice. The company that makes Depo
Provera insisted to me on the telephone that Depo does not affect supply,
except perhaps to increase it. I have not seen this...but I wouldn't..no
one calls me to tell me that their supply increases.
