I thought I might share what we are doing with our med students here at the
Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. It is hard to fit one more
minute of seminar time in an already busy schedule. To make maximum use of
the students' time, I designed a module that they could complete any time
during the three weeks they are on the obstetric service. The module
includes such activities as making rounds with a lactation consultant,
assisting new mothers with latch on, answering a set of questions, working
through a patient problem on paper, etc. The students LOVE it.
Breastfeeding is part of the seminars on prenatal care, contraception, and
other subjects, too. It is easier to integrate rather than segregate.
