Kathleen A, was it you who once used this analogy (in Boston)?
We are familiar with baby ducklings. They become imprinted with
the first things they see after they are hatched -- remember the little
duckling who thought he was a college student?
Well, our babies -- who will be suckling at the breast, a very
different physiological action from sucking on a rubber teat -- need to
be imprinted with breastfeeding.
I've used this story in my childbirth classes when talking about
introducing bottles. Mother's faces get very soft and fuzzy looking when
you talk about ducklings, and they react very favorable to this story.
It seems to defuse the whole preference/confusion thing and it just plain
makes sense.
Hope you'll find this useful. Was it you, Kathleen?
