Diane's post reminded me of another of my off the wall but entirely true stories..... I received a phone call one Saturday night from a mom who took my BF class. She was busy pumping so that she could leave a bottle of her milk for her baby the next day, but the father was having a terrible time bottle feeding the baby formula while she spoke to me (what's wrong with this picture, folks). It took me at least 3 times to repeat back to her what was going on (You know.... let me get this straight, now, you are pumping your milk so that your baby can have it while you are gone tomorrow, but the you are giving the baby formula now while you pump your milk?) She eventually "got it" and we discussed her other pumping options that did not include having to give the baby formula. I'm really on a roll at work-- saw 2 moms breastfeeding while sitting in our clinic waiting room. Today, the mom was talking to one of our pregnant gestational diabetics about how she was not planning to use any bottles (her baby was 5.5 mo and could take a sippy cup) and about how great breastfeeding was. I overheard 2 nurses telling the same diabetic about how great breastfeeding is (meanwhile that damn "we don't directly advertise to patients" poster is still flaunting its terrible ad because the advertiser hasn't shown up to take it down and it is bolted to the wall..... ARGHHH) Roberta, have you read the Politics of Breastfeeding by Gabrielle Palmer? In there she uses the idea of pressuring moms with the clock (you know," you have exactly 15 minutes to get this baby breastfed well, or I'm going to have to feed formula", says the impatient nurse with her clipboard and tapping toe. She compares it to having your first sexual experience with observers, an artificial penis (just in case....) and (if I remember correctly) a time limit. I wonder how this would be experienced by men? I thought it was very effective at getting across the idea that private activities when under pressure from time and when observed are difficult to complete! Katherine, time to educate the Texas Monthly--who knows they might just decide to do an article on the other uses of breasts, especially in light of the new legislation that makes it legal to use them for their intended use (which I don't think includes balancing cocktails). Martha, Queen of wierd stories and living in the town where Wright Patterson AFB is (you know the place where they are supposed to be keeping all the UFO information..... Hm...do you think that is why we have so many strange happenings here?????)
