For those considering teaching LAM, I have a caution. There are some lactation consultants who describe LAM as being wonderful, excellent and always possible. It is not always possible. Many women on this list have described their own 'early' onset of menses after birth, even while fully nursing. Perhaps one of the most frustrating things I have experienced is being told it was my fault that I menstruated at 6 weeks after the birth of my children. But with no artificial nipple, pacifier or other object touching their lips for 8 months, and nothing but breast milk from the breast which they sucked for hours each day (carried in a carrier that I designed for continual nursing), I do not see how the return of menses was my fault. I could not have used LAM, and I know a number of women who could not have done so. It is not for all women. What makes this issue difficult is when people become crusaders for the method.
