Several weeks ago on Lactnet there was a gentle but moving
reminder about the dangers of generalizing about any population group.
I think recently, we have fallen into the same pitfall regarding the
physician group.
I am a family practice physician and have NO affiliation with
any formula companies. I allow no reps to visit my office and even rip
the formula ads from the magazines in my waiting room. With two other
"working moms" I have started a support group for Moms who wish to
continue nursing when they return to employed work outside the home.
I have successfully breastfed my two children, my eldest for 2
1/2 years, my youngest is still nursing at 21 months.
It's very discouraging to be lumped together with those
physicians who may not be entirely ethical. But, I assure you, there
are those BF zealots out there who just happen to be physicians. I for
one would benefit from a few words of support occasionally, rather than
be subjected repeatedly to reminders that all physicians are not
"like-minded".
Stepping down from my soapbox now.
