Geez, does this mom have a full plate or what? Info on Imuran is from Hale (1994 ed.) Medications and Mothers' Milk: "Immunosuppressive agent. Small amounts are known to be secreted in human milk. No immunosuppressive effects have been noted in infants, but very little is known. Extreme caution is urged. AHL (adult elimination 1/2 life) = 0.6 hrs." This is not my area of expertise, but I'd be asking a lot of questions: Does the mother understand the purpose of being put on this med? Could any of the meds for one condition interact with meds for the other (and what are potential effects of interaction)? Do any meds for one condition possibly aggravate symptions for the other? Are there safe/effective alternate treatments/meds that could be used temporarily or permanently as baby moves more to other foods? Has the mother consulted 2nd/3rd opinions, especially from centers specializing in either or both conditions? (Several years ago a nurse colleague with MS discussed with several of us how political MS treatment is in the USA. This women eventually went to Germany to receive treatment, which was much more successful than treatment she'd received in this country-- and had meds sent via some international grapevine due to politics of getting FDA approval for these long-used German meds here. Moral of story--there often is more than one way to treat something; other ways sometimes are safer and more effective. At very least, consumer should understand all why's and wherefore's so that agreement to treatment is with well-informed consent.) Also, is use of this med different when it is a 6 month old being breastfed vs. a newborn? What signs/symptoms of med side effects should/could baby be watched/tested for? Etc. "Nuff said. I hope you'll keep us posted on this mom. My heart goes out to her as she makes such big decisions for herself and her baby while coping with two debilitating illnesses. Please tell her she and her family are being thought of and prayed for. Thanks. Karen
