For World Breastfeeding Week, in addition to making 4 posters -2 for each of the lobbies of our hospital, one for the OB floor and one for a meeting- I decided to take some breastfeeding related action. I was going through the free info given to parents in my hospital as I often do looking for "bad" messages and I cam accross LAMAZE magazine. While the breastfeeding article in this was actually GOOD - came right out and said that artificaal milk was not as good as human milk, there was an attached coupon from PLAYTEX. In thsi is a "Helpful Infant Feeding Guide. In it it states IF you breastfeed Have the following supplies within reach -a soft cloth or towel ( they never did say what this is for!!!) -nursing pads For better breathin, TILT BABY"S HEAD BACK (mu emphasis) or depress the surface of your breast near his/her nose. (They also said breastmilk can be frozen for two weeks - i pointed out that this was too conservative but I don't think that is quite as damagein) I decided this tilting the babies head back was sooo bad expecially in light of our conversation re forcing babies head that I felt a need to notify the company. After 10 minutes on the phone I found out that to addrss this one needs to send a letter on letterhead to: Kathy Dooney 215 College Rd Paramus, NJ 07652 I have sent such a letter today. Perhaps others will join me. Perhaps as people read other things that make their blood pressure rise they can send in the info who to write to and we can have mass mailings to such places (With 310 lactnetters, even if a third respond that's impressive). The squeky wheel gets the oil.... -- **************************************************** * Deena Zimmerman MD MPH * * Department of Pediatrics * * UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School * * 1 RWJ Place * * New Brunswick, NJ 08903 * * * * phone (908) 235-7248 * * fax (908) 235-7345 * * email [log in to unmask] (internet) * ****************************************************
