Hi Lisa and Fiona,
I have on occasion opened blisters in my office with a sterile
needle. Like other parts of the body, I usually don't recommend patients do
this themselves, as medicolegally, if they get an infection from taking
this advice over the phone, I am at risk. Of course, I hate practicing
medicine with such a concern , but that is truly life in the US for MDs.
But the other thing about blisters is that they are a symptom of something
else, as they occur from the nipple rubbing on the upper palate, so there
is a suck issue here. Therefore, the mom/baby dyad should be seen. When I
have opened blisters, it has been to decrease pain, and it does somewhat. I
also have cultured the fluid, but have never gotten a positive culture. The
blisters sometimes recur, depending on whether the underlying issue has
resolved.-Anne Eglash MD
