Hi Judy and other lactnetters,

We have suggested the one breast per feeding plan to mothers whose babies
seem to have a suspected lactose difficulty who have been offering both
breasts per feeding and have found that it works quite well.

In fact, I typically recommend feeding the very young baby on only one breast
per feeding and have found multiple benefits:
*easier for mother who is new at positioning and attaching baby at breast
*keeps baby feeding longer as new babies often fall asleep and do not arouse
to attach to second side--already attached to first side and can be reminded
to suck
*gets more hind milk into baby
*allows milk to more throuroughly flow through a breast at every other
feeding rather than partial flow each feeding-- result seems to be decrease
in plugged ducts and decrease in engorgement for the mothers following this
plan
