I finally have to admit that I cannot wear gloves when I do a lactation
consultation. I only put on gloves when I am examining an open lesion, as I
do with all my other patients. When I do well-child care, I never wear
gloves, and I don't know of MDs who do. I do not wear gloves when I examine
breast nipples, nor when I examine latchon/suck at the breast. I feel like
I am sending a message to the mom that she is dirty/contaminated. I feel
like I have a good sense of what lesions/wounds are hazardous. Anne
