When I went through training as a family planning counselor it was recommended that women try a trial month on the mini-pill before going to the depo-provera shot or norplant. This would alert them to side effects and enable them to make a decision before getting locked into a three month or long term (not to mention expensive) method that was not acceptable. I find that if I have the opportunity to discuss the potential for milk reduction (however rare and regardless of what the manufacturer says) they look at this option a little differently. Unfortunately most LC's don't have the opportunity to discuss family planning methods with mothers unless the damage is done and there is a problem. Denise Parker, BA, IBCLC
