I have recently seen a baby whose frenulum is attached to the tip of his
tongue and has a great deal of difficulty latching onto his mother's flat
nipples. In fact, this mom has chosen to quit trying and is solely
pumping and bottle feeding. I have discussed having the frenulum clipped
to see if this might help his latch, but the pediatrician is hesitant and
therefore so is the mother. I have talked with a pediatric dentist I
know about the procedure, but he believes clipping frenulums can only
occur in the hospital under general anesthesia and this is why parents
and doctors are reluctant to do it. I did not think this was the case.
Does anyone have any references as to how to do the procedure that I
could share with the dentist? Thanks.
