I compare being "pushed into" the breast with being held underwater in a
pool--something that's happened to almost everyone at some time.

I don't think "rough" handling is mostly a nurse problem (although some of
the unnecessary vigor I've seen with post-delivery suction and/or intubation
to suction for meconium below the cords can be laid at doctors' and nurses'
doors). I am seeing so many first-time mothers who have had little if any
experience even holding a baby. I often have to say, "Let's wait on getting
the breastfeeding right for a few minutes so you can work on feeling
comfortable just holding the baby." They are so stiff! And with stiffness
goes some rough handling (and pushing into the breast)!
