Esther,

I can find nothing on breastmilk increasing the risk of post-surgical wound
infection.
We have numerous reports and experiences where mothers have a breast
abscess-draining surgery and heal perfectly without infection or
complications even with milk actually dripping from the wound.

Some neonathologist colleagues use breastmilk to help with wound healing in
their NICU babies (skin ulcers, for example) with good results - certainly
it dos NOT cause iinfection.

There are studies, for example this one:
http://www.nature.com/jp/journal/v33/n8/full/jp201327a.html
in which babies are fed either breastmilk or formula afeter gastroschisis
repair (surgery of the gut), and the babies that receive breast milk do
very much better - therefore, the breastmilk does not cause more infection.

And of course, just knowing a little about human milk propierties should
put anyone at ease about its "infectiousness".

So, the question as usual should be "Dear Doc, do you have proof that
breastmilk can cause infection or damagae in breast surgery?"

Hugs from Madrid!!
Kika
