Hi Susan. You are spot on! The babies I saw readmitted for exaggerated jaundice were not breastfeeding well. Baby being AT the breast is not the same as baby breastfeeding efficiently. The mothers often had sore nipples. Yamauchi and Yamanouchi (1990) compared 140 newborns: Group A: Bf less than 7 times during first 24 hours Group B: Bf between 7 – 11 times during first 24 hours Group B took: 84% more milk on their 2nd day 54% more milk on their 3rd day 86% more milk on their 5th day They also explored the link to jaundice and again looked at how frequently babies breastfed in the first 24 hours. Exaggerated jaundice on day 6 was confirmed in: 28% of babies who breastfed 1 – 2 times 24.5% of babies who breastfed 3 - 4 times 15% of babies who breastfed 5 - 6 times 12% of babies who breastfed 7 - 8 times 0% of babies who breastfed 9 - 11 times Jean Ridler RN RM IBCLC Cape Town, South Africa > Is there a relationship between exclusive breastfeeding during the hospital stay, > with no supplements, and a higher readmission rate for phototherapy?
