Tricia asks <<Lactneters - has anyone ever heard of any surgery or treatment for women when they experience scarring to damage to a duct that results in recurrent plugged ducts? Would a surgeon ever do a surgical removal of that area of the breast? Would that just likely cause more damage?>> I don't know the answer to this one, however we don't know for sure if there is scarring but we can speculate that. Possibly an ultrasound or even MRI could see what is going on internally. I think if the mother had recurrent mastitis even when not lactating, perhaps a surgeon would remove that dysfunctional part. I think in this case, a surgery would be more complicated, and drying up or involuting that breast would be more successful. However, I am concerned that this mother who already has very low milk production, would lose the production capacity of that side. Tough call.
