Dear Friends, I realize from responses that I have received that my earlier post requesting resources to give to my professors in nursing school gives a skewed picture of nursing education in the country. My post refers specifically to two professors who I had who are not nurses themselves and not working with mothers and babies. I have several amazing professors, nurses, IBCLCs teaching gynecology, maternity, lactation, pregnancy...I haven't had those courses yet but Cultural Competence was taught by an IBCLC, an expert in the field of culturally appropriate health care, and was fantastic! My nutrition professor (not an IBCLC) taught us about such diseases as kwashiorkor, and pointed out repeatedly that these diseases of malnutrition begin when the baby is no longer breastfed. When asked by a student if she should skim the milk off of her expressed milk before giving it to her baby (we were learning the dangers of fat) she responded by saying that breastmilk is the perfect food for the baby and not to mess with it. Our sociology professor, used abm advertising in several examples of big money trumping public health interests. In fact, in recent years, the Israeli ministry of health, decided that all postpartum women must have a proper breastfeeding consult while in the hospital. In order to make this happen, a course was created to train nurses working with postpartum mothers (in the community as well in the hospital) to be able to really help with breastfeeding. One of my instructors to be, RN, MA IBCLC, had a huge part in putting the course together for the ministry of health and teaches it in the same school where I study. The course is based on the ILCA core competencies. So there is some really good breastfeeding education going on, for nurses, by nurses. Please take my last post for what it was - a rant about 2 of my instructors who definitely need to be educated about the risks of not breastfeeding and a request for help with resources - which you've come through with - thanks! I'm very proud of where I am studying and despite my loyalty to my own school - I know that mine is not the only one in the country offering great education. Breastfeeding rates have gone up in Israel - we're doing something right. Thanks to those of you who sent me resources, All the best, Chayn Fogelman, BA, IBCLC and proudly working towards my RN (at 45 years old!) in Israel *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html To reach list owners: [log in to unmask] Mail all list management commands to: [log in to unmask] COMMANDS: 1.
