I finally looked under my daughter's tongue (8 yrs old) for a posterior tongue tie, as in the video that has been shared on Lactnet. Wouldn't you know it - there it was. She never had a day's trouble nursing (yay!) in her 3 + years of bf. However, she had moderate to significant speech problems. She can't do her "L"s at the back of her tongue, only the tip of her tongue. Hard K's ang G's were very difficult for her, and only came around 2 years into speech therapy (gratefully paid by the school). She hears me tease one of her older brothers that also has a tongue tie (discovered when he was 12!) about having his tongue clipped (minor teeth crowding, constant lisp). She asked if her's was going to be clipped, too. I asked my dentist about Braeden's and was told he would only clip it if a speech path said it was causing problems. With Cordelia's 4 years of speech therapy, I'm wondering if he'd clip it. Her speech path didn't get the PTT (neither did I, though). But it does wholy explain why any sound which required the lifting of the back of her tongue was so difficult for her. (As an aside, she only now has problems with her R's and cannot roll her R's, either. I hope she never has to learn spanish LOL).
