Laura mentions a 1992 LEAVEN article "Leaders and Lactation Consultants" which references an even older 1990 LEAVEN article "Guidelines for Active Leaders Who Also Work As Paid Lactation Consultants", This 1990 article (and anything based on it) is out of date. The most current PSR (policy and standing rules) from LLLI discuss guidelines for Leaders who are lactation consultants: this is the "Code of Ethics: Leaders with Personal, Professional, or Commercial Interests" which states "Some LLL Leaders may be engaged in paid professions and businesses which offer products or services of value to mothers. LLL Leaders shall make all efforts to separate their roles as LLL Leaders from these paid professions. An LLL Leader who is also a paid professional or businesswoman shall offer choices to mothers, in addition to her own products or services, when appropriate and possible." So a Leader may certainly let a mother know she is also an IBCLC -- as long as she also lets a mother know about her IBCLC colleagues also available locally. The key is to offer choices. We can take our volunteer and professional hats on and off but we can't wear both at once. If it becomes clear during a volunteer helping situation that the expertise of a professional IBCLC is called for, and we have that expertise, it is appropriate to use it -- but then the mother becomes a CLIENT and all our professional responsibilities as an IBCLC (including consent, assessment, history, documentation, reporting) are called for. An IBCLC could decide to give her services for free to a mother she meets via a volunteer situation -- but that mother still deserves the same service a paying client would receive & our professional responsibility requires it. Do I have that right, Liz? (I do not speak in any official capacity for LLLI, I hasten to add. It's a topic I find interesting and tend to talk about often. If my information is not up to date, someone let me know!)
