It appears babies correct their fluids in the first day postpartum and the correction results in a weight loss. As you can read in the newly published paper - these relationships are time limited. Our conclusion based on these findings are that birth weight should not be used as the baseline to calculate weight loss - the babies need time to balance their fluids (i.e., diurese). ~~~ This is such important research: as birth changes ( more interventions, more epidurals, more CS and much more IVs commonly) and we look more closely at how to support babies after birth as they learn to feed normally ( at breast) after these "ab-normal" experiences, this is very very helpful stuff...
