Dear Lactnet
What a tragedy. The hospital in my community experienced a similar infant death many years ago and the aftermath still reverberates today. My heart goes out, of course, to the parents, but also the staff, and ultimately, the community of future mothers and babies as knee jerk policies are developed that may not be based on sound evidence. I don't know if this would be at all helpful, but Perinatal BC has recently posted their new Safe Sleep Guideline that is the best review of the evidence I have seen and presents a fairly balanced assessment of the risks and benefits of bedsharing. It can be found on the Perinatal BC website at http://www.perinatalservicesbc.ca/sites/bcrcp/files/Guidelines/Health_Promotion_and_Prevention/Infant_Sleep_Environment.pdf
