Pat pointed out: Actually, according to Dr Anderson, crying in the newborn keeps the foramen open, when it should be closing. I remember hearing a theory that these young, seemingly healthy athletes who literally "drop dead" are reported to have been fussy, crying babies and that perhaps that led to incomplete sealing of the foramen ovale which "broke through" under the stress of sports in later years. Has anyone else heard this? Has it been studied or is it just an interesting theiry?
